Chugoku
Sanyo and Sanin “Yang and Yin”
Chugoku is at Western end of the main Honshu Island and includes the prefectures of Okayama, Tottori, Shimane, Hiroshima, and Yamaguchi.
Mountains run down the middle separating
the two sub regions of Sanyo and Sanin.
The Kanji for Sanyo (山陽) means the sunny side of the mountain (and in Chinese can be read as Yang)
and faces the Seto Inland Sea and Shikoku.
Whilst on the west side it is called Sanin (山陰) means “shady side of the mountain
(and in Chinese is read as Yin), and faces the Sea of Japan.
Chugoku has many places to visit. Although the Sanyo region is quite well known because of Hiroshima, Sanin has some hidden gems as well.
Besides, Hiroshima, Sanyo has the cities of Okayama, Kurashiki and Onomichi. The lesser known Sanin region has Matsue, the “City of Water”, Izumo Taisha (important shinto shrine) and Tottori amongst various places
