TS日本鉄道旅行企画株式会社 Asahi Shimbun article

TS Japan Rail’s founder & President, Stephen Turner, recently talked to the Asahi Shimbun about why he set up TS Japan Rail and the charms of travelling on Japan’s local rail lines…

Stephen Turner President of TS Japan Rail

Turner has lived in Japan for 32 years and is originally from the UK. He has been a rail enthusiast all his life and in Japan has travelled to most prefectures, except Okinawa which only has one monorail.

Turner says one of the challenges the company faces is that in many countries public transport is not regarded as being safe and reliable. In Japan however it is different, and this needs to be publicized to foreign visitors.

Many foreign visitors to Japan do not go beyond the shinkansen network which is a pity as they are missing so many other places in Japan.

Turner talks about how local rail travel rail travel offers a glimpse into the life of Japanese people and how you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the four seasons.

He hopes that he can persuade more foreign tourists to enjoy other parts of Japan than just the so called golden route (Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka) by travelling around Japan by train. He also hopes that this will help some of those rural lines that are struggling financially. Japan has many wonderful places both scenically and culturally.

That’s fantastic exposure Stephen – congratulations!

Encouraging that they’ve picked up on your passion for getting visitors off the shinkansen, out into the regions and onto some of those glorious local lines.

Hopefully more visitors to Japan will go beyond Tokyo and get off the beaten path a bit more.
