The story behind TS Japan Rail…
The Yomiuri Shimbun featured Stephen Turner in its “Shiawase Kobako” (“Small Box of Happiness”) feature in its evening edition during the week 19th~23rd June 2023.
The article starts when Turner first arrived in Japan back in 1990. One of his first impressions was how easy it was to get around by public transport (at least in Tokyo), to his surprise as his boss had told him it was very difficult!
Japan, a heaven for rail enthusiasts…
Turner has been a rail enthusiast since he was child and spent a lot of time at the local railway station “train spotting”. Japan is also a heaven for rail enthusiasts with its rich variety of trains and different routes.
Tokyo to Sendai and back in one day by local train…
He recalls one trip he made with his son (also a rail enthusiast), travelling by local trains from Tokyo to Sendai and back again in a single day using the Joban Line and Tohoku Line. In fact Turner’s passion is travelling on the many local lines in Japan. This is both because of the interesting trains but also the great scenery. It is also a great way to experience Japan.
JR Gono Line…
Turner’s favourite rail line is the JR Gono Line that runs along the Japan Sea Coast in Aomori and Akita Prefectures. Actually there are so many interesting in rail lines that it was difficult to decide the most favourite. Read TSJR article featuring the JR Gono Line
Japanese Railway Society…
Turner is also a member of the Japanese Railway Society (JRS). JRS is a UK based society with members around the world, including both Japanese and non Japanese in Japan. JRS website
TS Japan Rail..helping people see more of Japan and Japan’s railways…
TS Japan Rail was set up in 2019 as Turner sought to make the most of his love of Japan and its railways, planning rail trips and also to help foreign tourists to explore and see more of Japan. In particular, the company wants to encourage tourists to see more than the so called “Golden Route” and to get off the Shinkansen and travel on some of the many local lines.
