TSJR's Pick of Useful resources

Make the Most of Your Trip to Japan

TSJR’s Recommended Travel Resources

At TS Japan Rail, we’re committed to helping you enjoy an unforgettable trip to Japan.
While our core expertise is in rail travel, we’re also passionate about exploring and sharing authentic, locally sourced travel tips.

Our team researches destinations across Japan, with a special focus on places that are less-traveled by inbound tourists. Whether you’re planning your first visit or your fifth, you’ll find valuable insights here to help you experience the real Japan.

We’ve created this curated travel resource hub, which we’ll continue to grow over time. You’ll find links to helpful regional travel sites, trusted ticket booking platforms, and services from local travel partners we genuinely recommend.

We value our independence and offer unbiased, experience-based advice.

We don’t take commissions (unless noted)

our advice is independent, and sometimes even saves you money!

Here’s what we recommend

Train Ticket Booking Sites

Fares & Tickets

Booking tickets online

Booking shinkansen and Limited Express trains is  easy to do online. Also using these links you will not pay commissions that often exceed 25%!

All the platforms we have listed are operated by the JR companies so are commission free and also unlike third party sites you can select your seats. In some cases you may even get a discount on normal fares.

Most non JR rail companies that operate Limited Express or tourist trains requiring bookings also have their own on line booking sites.

Important

Before booking on any of these sites check the instructions on where to pick up the tickets. In some cases you will get a QR code you can use instead of tickets or link your booking to a transportaion IC Card.

(If You Live in Japan & Understand Japanese)

Why Japanese Booking Sites Are Better?

If you live in Japan and understand Japanese we recommend that you use the Japanese on line booking sites as they have far more functionality. For example on the Japanese Ekinet site you can book all JR Shinkansen and Limited Express tickets no matter which JR company operates them and also buy the basic fare ticket seperately, this in some cases will save you money!

SmartEX

SmartEX is operated by JR Tokai and allows you to book seats on the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen lines. It is easy to use and various languages are available. SmartEX can only be used shinkansen bookings so is fairly limited in its use.

Where to get your JR Japan Rail Pass

JR Japan Rail Pass

JR Japan Rail Pass

JR Japan Rail Pass is a special train ticket for travelers visiting Japan. It offers unlimited travel on most JR trains, including the famous Shinkansen (bullet trains), for a set number of days (7, 14, or 21 days). It’s a great way to explore Japan by train and can help you save money if you’re traveling long distances. The pass is available only to temporary visitors to Japan and must be purchased before arriving in Japan (or online from the official JR site).
Buy your JR Japan Rail Pass direct from JR

Buy Your JR Pass the Smart Way

Always purchase your JR Japan Rail Pass directly from the official JR website—not from third-party sellers. This gives you a reservation number immediately, allowing you to book trains in advance.

Third-party purchases require waiting for a voucher and can’t be used to book trains until you arrive in Japan.

For regional passes, use the official booking site of the relevant JR company.

And before buying, make sure a JR Pass is the right choice for your trip!

In Japan

Etiquette tips

All countries have their unique practices, customs, and often unwritten etiquette rules. Many of these are not formal rules but rather guidelines rooted in common sense. It is important to note that numerous claims made on social media about local customs may not be accurate.

Our advice is to observe and follow the behaviors of the local population; this approach will generally serve you well. Additionally, locals usually offer some flexibility and understanding toward visitors.

Avoid Eating & Drinking on the street or Public Transport

Do not eat or drink on the street, particularly whilst walking. In some areas (e.g. Tokyo Shibuya) drinking alcohol on the street is legally prohibited. Eating and drinking on shinkansen & long distance trains is ok however.

Take your litter to your accomodation if you cannot find a litter bin

For various reasons there are few rubbish bins on the streets or in stations. Please do not drop litter and take your rubbish back to your accomodation. Help Japan keep its reputation of being a clean country. Rubbish is sorted iin to different types.

Taking Picture and videos

Please ask for permission before taking photos and videos of people and unless you have the persons permission do not post on the internet / social media without masking faces. Do not trespass on private property or cause disruption to others. People in Japan value their privacy.

Do not speak on your mobile phone on Public Transport

On ordinary trains please avoid talking on your phone. On shinkansen or long distance trains if you need to make or take a call please go to the decks at the end of the carriage.

Take off your shoes

Be prepared to take off your shoes at the entrance to people's homes. When you enter many shrines and temples you will also be required to take off your shoes. Some traditional restaurants you may also be required you to take off your shoes.

No Tipping

In Japan tipping is rarely done or expected. To avoid any problems or embarrassment please do not to leave a tip. A verbal appreciation for good service is enough. An exception is some "late night" bars may accept tips and it is customary for tour guides to be tipped.
