Price of JR All Japan Rail Passes to go up in October...

We believe that this will bring the regional passes into focus and for those who want to Explore Japan by Train the All Japan JR Rail Passes will still be good value... As part of our travel planning services for clients we will also advise on best passes and tickets, both in terms of price and convenience.

The JR companies announced steep increases in the cost of the All Japan JR Rail Passes to take effect in October. They will also be announcing details of other changes to these passes in due course.

We know that many people are wondering how this will affect their travel plans.

This is what TS Japan Rail thinks:

		Firstly, the majority of foreign visitors will probably not be affected as much as they think. For many foreign visitors to Japan they are breaking even plus / minus small amounts. So, for most visitors, buying ordinary tickets will not cost much more than what they pay for the current rail passes, and they will have the flexibility to use the faster Nozomi and Mizuho shinkansen services.
		There are many regional JR Rail Passes available to foreign visitors. These allow travel in selected areas and many include travel on specified non JR Lines and even some bus routes. This is an option that is currently available but it may be that combination of buying ordinary tickets and regional passes provides a more flexible and economical way to explore Japan by Rail.
		We cannot deny that the All Japan Rail Passes will be considerably more expensive, but we do believe that for those who want to get off the beaten track and explore Japan by train that these passes can still offer good value for money.. Of course planning your trip becomes more important, but the potential opportunities are great!
		There are also a lot of other passes available (to both foreign visitors and all) which may also provide better opportunities with or without using in combination with a JR Rail Pass.
